top ram temple officials quizzed in embezzlement of funds case
Ayodhya, June 18 -- The Special Investigation Team (SIT) questioned Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra general secretary Champat Rai and administrator Gopal Rao on Wednesday in connection with allegations of embezzlement of donations from the Ram temple.
The team also examined CCTV footage and the Trust's records, inspected donation boxes and counted them, according to people familiar with the matter.
Champat Rai and Gopal Rao were questioned separately about the donation money, the arrangements inside the temple and the people associated with it.
The SIT, constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government, comprises Lucknow divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, inspector general of police Kiran S and special secretary (Finance) Neelratan Kumar.
So far, three people have lodged complaints at different police stations regarding alleged irregularities in temple funds. However, an FIR is yet to be registered.
Meanwhile, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court will hear a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in connection with the alleged embezzlement of temple funds. The PIL, seeking a CBI inquiry and a CAG audit, was filed by Mohit Ashok, a local lawyer, last Friday.
