Chandigarh, July 5 -- After a brief spell of light showers brought respite from heat on Saturday, Chandigarh is set to witness an intensified monsoon phase, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall in the city from Monday. A yellow alert has been issued till Wednesday.
The Union Territory recorded maximum temperature of 35.7deg Celsius, 0.2degC below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.1degC, which is normal for this time of the year.
Chandigarh received 0.4 mm of rainfall until 5.30 pm on Saturday, while 1.4 mm was recorded during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 pm. However, since the onset of the monsoon, the city has largely witnessed only light, scattered showers, with rainfall confined to isolated pockets.
A yellow alert has been issued for Sunday, with thunderstorms, lightening and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph likely. Despite the breezy conditions, the maximum temperature is expected to rise to around 37degC before dropping to 35degC on Monday. It is likely to fall further to around 34degC by Thursday. Similar alerts remain in place for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated places across the UT.
