Textile trader shot at in Amritsar, injured; 4 held
Amritsar, Oct. 16 -- Unidentified assailants opened fire at a cloth trader outside his home in Sunder Nagar on Wednesday night, leaving him gravely injured, officials said on Thursday.
CCTV footage showed the victim, Vishal, alias Gori, arriving on a motorcycle with another person. His statement has yet to be recorded.
Acting swiftly, police arrested four accused in connection with the firing. A .32-bore revolver and a motorcycle, used in the crime, were also recovered, said investigators, adding that they were probing the matter from various angles, including extortion and personal enmity.
Police commissioner Harmanvir Singh Gill said, "The trader sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He is injured but out of danger. Further interrogation is underway."
Reacting to the incident, Congress leader Vijay Inder Singla said, "How can any Punjabis feel safe under such lawlessness? Traders fear refusing ransom calls, families fear losing their sons and citizens raising their voice fear being silenced. Criminals operate with total impunity, leaving law-abiding citizens to live in constant terror. The AAP government cannot hide behind hollow claims while Punjab's people pay the price with their lives."...
