Teacher preparing, supplying chemicals for psychoactive drugs held
AGRA/LUCKNOW, March 9 -- An Agra-based chemistry teacher has been arrested for allegedly preparing chemical precursors for MDMA, a prohibited psychoactive drug, and supplying them to rave parties in Telangana, police said.
While the case is reminiscent of the hit American crime drama Breaking Bad, police officers said that the accused, Manoj Kumar, 36, had reportedly never watched the series. Investigators, however, suspect his associate may have been familiar with the storyline, which revolves around a chemistry teacher using scientific knowledge to enter the illicit drug trade.
Agra police commissioner Deepak Kumar said Manoj, who holds an MSc in chemistry and a BEd degree, was arrested by Agra police on Friday after Hyderabad police alerted them during a probe into MDMA supplies for rave parties in Hyderabad. Hundreds of litres of chemical substances was recovered from his rented house in Agra's Khandoli area, police said. Based on the recovery, police registered a case under sections 9A, 25A, 29 and 30 of the NDPS Act. Manoj was produced before a city court on Saturday and was remanded in judicial custody.
"Manoj, who is from Narkhi village in Firozabad district, had been living on rent in Khandoli for nearly 15 years. The house where the chemicals were recovered belongs to Dinesh Upadhayay," additional commissioner of police (ADCP) Aditya Singh said.
"Manoj had strong knowledge of chemical compounds, and allegedly used his expertise to prepare precursor materials required for manufacturing MDMA," Singh added. The probe began earlier this week when Hyderabad police raided a village linked to a drug network and contacted Agra police. Telangana police had earlier arrested Virendra Kumar, a mathematics teacher in Jodhpur, for allegedly selling MDMA online. "Virendra revealed that Manoj used his knowledge to prepare the materials needed for MDMA," Singh said....
