Panchkula, May 8 -- Rajya Sabha member and All India Congress Committee general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala on Thursday alleged that the BJP had turned Panchkula from a planned modern city into a "problem city", accusing them of converting the "triple-engine government" into an "ATM of loot." Surjewala was addressing a press conference at the election office of Congress mayoral candidate for Panchkula municipal corporation (MC) polls, Sudha Bhardwaj. Surjewala alleged a Rs.160 crore scam in the MC, misuse of public funds and illegal occupation of community centres. He also accused the BJP government of failing to develop Panchkula as an IT, medical and education hub, while highlighting issues such as garbage, stray animals, incomplete development works and deteriorating law and order. Calling BJP's promises on Ghaggar beautification, lakes and walkways "castles in the air", he alleged that the government is promoting the builder mafia by approving fourth floors in the city.
