SpaceX controls Starlink, no one in US govt slowed it in Ukraine: Rubio
New Delhi, Oct. 19 -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday denied reports that the US government was involved in the disruption of Starlink connectivity in Ukraine, as claimed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Rubio said that Starlink is a commercial product and is not operated by the US government.
He said that Starlink's military arm, Starshield, is a defence product that is used by the US military and is not available to Ukraine.
He added that Ukraine uses Starlink to conduct its drone operations, and has requested access to Starshield to conduct strikes deep inside Russia, and the United States is reviewing Ukraine's request. Rubio made his remarks while answering questions from the media at Joint Base Andrews before departing on his trip to Central Asia and India.
"Starlink is a commercial product. It's regulated and handled as a commercial product. Starshield is a defence product, a military product. And as I said, I mean, that is something that we have - the United States military uses. It's not at this moment available to Ukraine, and that's under conversation. It's under discussion right now of how they would want to use it," Rubio said.
When asked if the US had anything to do with it not working in Ukraine, and to address Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's accusations that it was deliberate, Rubio said, "Well, I don't know what Zelensky said. I'm not sure Zelensky knows what he's talking about, but it wasn't deliberate. We have nothing to do with that. I don't - the United States, nobody ordered that Starlink speed to be slowed down. It sort of happened, but my understanding is it's been restored. It's back to where it was before. That's Starlink, though. They were using Starlink for their drones...No one at the White House ordered anyone to slow down internet or slow down speed so that certain drones couldn't use it. "
He added, "Starshield is a contract with the US military. It has nothing to do with Ukraine. I know Ukraine wants access to Starshield. They do not have Starshield now. They've asked for access to it in order to conduct deep strikes inside of Russia. They do not have access to it at this moment. Those are two different products."...
