Snow, rain bring down temps in Kashmir
Srinagar, May 22 -- Some places in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while the plains were lashed by rain in the early hours of Thursday, bringing down temperatures, officials said.
The frontier Gurez sector in north Kashmir's Bandipora, Zojilla Pass along the Srinagar-Leh national highway and Sonamarg received snowfall. A few other peaks in the higher reaches of the valley were also draped in white.
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms inundated a portion of Srinagar-Bandipora road damaging it as water and mud entered several houses downhill. The plains of the valley, including the summer capital of Srinagar, were lashed by intermittent rains.
"There was heavy rainfall and owing to blocked drainage, the Srinagar-Bandipora road near a religious seminary was inundated which washed away its protection bund and a portion of the road. Some seven houses downhill were filled with water and mud injuring two persons," said Sajid Ahmad, a local of Bandipora.
In south Kashmir, gusty winds caused a massive Chinar Tree to fall at Akad in Anantnag which damaged the electric service lines passing through the area. Elsewhere in the district, a significant number of livestock, including sheep and goat, were killed after a lightning strike during the night in the Lanedagen area of Pahalgam.
In capital Srinagar, a houseboat which housed a family and four tourists sank partially in River Jhelum in the wee hours amid light rainfall.
The owner of the houseboat said that the big waves caused by some motor boats passing through the area filled the boat with water.
"It happened in the early hours and water suddenly filled the houseboat and we could not salvage anything. In the first instant we helped the four tourists to come out. The tourists then helped me to rescue my children from the inundated boat," the owner said.
In summer capital Srinagar, the maximum temperature was recorded 23.5 degree Celsius, some 1.5 degrees below normal. Kupwara recorded 20 degree Celsius, some 6.3 notches below normal while the coldestplace was Gulmarg with temperature dropping to 12.6 degree Celsius.
The meteorological centre in Srinagar said that weather will be generally cloudy with one or two spells of light rain, gusty winds and hailstorm at many places on Friday....
