Six arrested as fake call centre busted in Zirakpur
Mohali, June 5 -- In yet another fake call centre bust in the tricity, Zirakpur police arrested six persons from Global Business Park for allegedly cheating foreign and domestic flyers by posing as representatives of major airlines.
In a similar bust on June 2, 21 persons had been arrested from Panchkula's Sector 2 for defrauding US nationals by posing as representatives of Amazon customer service.
In the Zirakpur case, a police team, led by station house officer (SHO) Satinder Singh, had got a tip-off during a late-night patrol on Wednesday that an illegal call centre, under the name 'Hometown Travels Pvt Ltd', was operating on the second floor of Global Business Park.
Acting swiftly, the team raided the premises and found several employees engaged in conversations with foreign nationals.
The accused, identified as Prashant Negi of Uttarakhand, Ansul of Himachal Pradesh, Jaspreet Singh of Himachal Pradesh, Sumer Singh Saini of Jammu, Shubham of Haryana and Deepak Kumar of Haryana, were arrested from thespot.
Police also seized five computers, a laptop and other digital equipment from them.
Initial investigations revealed that the accused used to pose as representatives of United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, JSX, EVA Air and Air France-KLM and persuade their targets to share credit card and other banking details on the pretext of booking flight tickets and arranging other travel related services.
They also generated fake email confirmations and payment receipts to make the transactions appear genuine.
Investigators found that the accused had acquired toll-free numbers and advertised themselves as customer-support helplines of international airlines to appear on online search engines.
Police suspect the call centre had been running for a considerable period and may have targeted multiple victims in India and abroad.
The devices seized from the accused have been sent for forensic examination to establish the scale of the fraud and trace others involved.
The case has been registered under Sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), 318(4) (cheating) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Zirakpur police station....
