Chandigarh, Sept. 30 -- The International Sikh Confederation (ISC) on Monday called for a new Sikh Gurdwaras Act for the management of gurdwaras while discussing uncertainty over the conduct of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) polls. The demand was made at a conclave "The Way Forward: SGPC Elections", organised by the ISC at Chandigarh. Former MP and ex-chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities Tarlochan Singh presided over the convention. In his address, Kashmir Singh, former head and dean of the faculty of law at Guru Nanak Dev University and chairperson of the ISC's legal affairs advisory council, said that repeated delays had weakened the democratic functioning of the SGPC, citing vacancies in the SGPC general house as elections has not taken since 2011. A unanimous resolution was passed which called upon the Punjab government to initiate consultations with the SGPC, Sikh legal experts and intellectuals to prepare a draft Punjab Sikh Gurdwaras Bill. The conclave was convened by agricultural economist Sardara Singh Johl.
