Shreyas set to be named T20I skipper on Saturday
Mumbai, June 5 -- Shreyas Iyer, who led Punjab Kings in the recently concluded Indian Premier League, is set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's new T20I captain, while Tilak Varma would be his deputy, people in the know in the BCCI said.
The official announcement will be made on Saturday when the India squads for the T20I series against Ireland, England, as well as the Asian Games is picked by the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan starting on June 13 due to a hamstring injury he suffered during the IPL final. Kohli's absence leaves open a big hole at No.3. The senior batter has been prolific ever since he decided to focus only on ODIs. In nine ODIs between the last two IPLs, Kohli has scored three hundreds and three fifties.
It can be confirmed, Kohli's absence will open the door for Ruturaj Gaikwad who hit a ton in the last ODI series he played, against South Africa.
Gaikwad, who has been named in the India A team to tour Sri Lanka for the ODI tri-series is likely to be replaced by Rajat Patidar. There are also question marks surrounding Rohit Sharma's fitness. Rohit suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of the IPL and could not field for the duration of the tournament. He batted as an Impact Player for MI. Rohit is yet to report to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru to clear the mandatory fitness tests. Yashasvi Jaiswal is acting as cover.
Hardik Pandya is likely to undergo fitness tests at COE before being declared fit for the series.
