AMRITSAR, Aug. 23 -- The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) executive committee on Saturday approved a Rs.2.5 crore grant-in-aid for Miri Piri Medical College, Shahabad Markanda, Haryana, and gave in-principle approval for construction of a memorial dedicated to human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who went missing in 1995, at Harike Pattan. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the executive committee chaired by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, who said the proposal for the Khalra memorial was approved in accordance with directions issued by the Akal Takht jathedar during a recent event at Harike Pattan. A suitable site will be identified, and work on the memorial will begin soon, he said. The committee also approved in principle the construction of memorials dedicated to Bhai Gurdas Ji and Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Ji in the Darbar Sahib complex. Dhami said both personalities played an important role in Sikh history and rendered significant services at Harmandar Sahib. The memorials will be constructed on either side of Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Gurbakhsh Singh. The committee decided to organise special prayers for the welfare and release of Sikh prisoners. Dhami said Akhand Paath of Guru Granth Sahib would begin at all gurdwaras under SGPC management on August 27, with bhog on August 29, followed by collective prayers. Sri Sukhmani Sahib recitations will also be held at all SGPC-managed educational institutions and trusts on August 29, followed by prayers for the high spirit of Sikh prisoners. Dhami demanded immediate parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara, convicted in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, so he could meet his seriously ill elderly mother. He criticised the government's response to the parole plea and expressed concern over the delay in the case seeking commutation of the death sentence of Balwant Singh Rajoana, also convicted for the assassination of Beant Singh. The committee condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal in Nanded. Dhami said attacking a devotee inside a gurdwara was a violation of the sanctity and discipline of the religious place and should be condemned unequivocally. The executive committee also approved various works related to gurdwaras, trusts, educational institutions, and other administrative activities....
