SC summons officials over illicit sand mining
New Delhi, May 15 -- The Supreme Court on Thursday summoned top officials of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh over illegal sand mining in the National Chambal Gharial sanctuary expressing shock and apathy at the dismal state of administrative lethargy in tackling the mining mafia .
Passing an order in a suo motu proceeding emanating from newspaper reports highlighting the shocking state of affairs in the two states, a bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta deprecated Rajasthan for not bothering to file status reports to a slew of directions issued by the court.
"Such persistent inaction, despite the grave concerns recorded and directions issued by this court, demonstrates a disturbing lack of seriousness and intent on the part of the state machinery in addressing matters directly involving environmental governance, and the rule of law itself," the order said.HTC...
