Panchkula, July 8 -- A retired chief engineer of the Haryana Irrigation department was allegedly duped of Rs.7.46 lakh after cyber fraudsters posing as representatives of Urban Company, a multinational home service provider, tricked him into downloading a fake mobile application and hacked his phone. According to the complaint, Anil Kumar Gupta, 68, a resident of Sector 20, Panchkula, searched online for the service provider's customer care number on June 2 to book a bathroom cleaning service. He called a number that appeared in the search results, where the person on the other end claimed to be a company representative and asked him to download a counterfeit application during the conversation to complete the booking. When the app failed to function, he received another WhatsApp call on June 4, during which another person, again posing as the firm's executive, persuaded him to install a different application. Soon after installing the app, Gupta's phone began malfunctioning. Later, his daughter informed him that his mobile number had remained continuously busy for several hours. On contacting his telecom service provider, he discovered that the call forwarding had been activated to an unknown mobile number without his knowledge. Upon checking his bank accounts he found that Rs.5.49 lakh had been fraudulently withdrawn from his bank credit card, while another Rs.73,000 was siphoned from another bank account. Gupta subsequently blocked his credit card, bank accounts and reset his mobile phone, but by then the fraudsters had already stolen Rs.7.46 lakh. The victim had lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police station, following which an FIR was registered on July 6 under Sections 318(4), 319 and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the unknown accused.
