Punjab Cong leader, his driver killed in Sonepat hit and run
Rohtak, April 3 -- A Punjab Congress leader and his driver, who had stopped their Defender SUV on the roadside to check its flat tyres, were killed in a hit-and-run accident near Jakhauli toll plaza on the Kundli-Manesar and Palwal expressway in Sonepat on Thursday evening, police said. The deceased have been identified as former Congress Bathinda (rural) president Khushbaz Singh Jattana, 45 and his driver Parminder Singh. His gunman, Harandeep Singh sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Sonepat's civil hospital for treatment.
According to police, the incident took place around 6.15 pm when Jattana along with his driver, gun man and a local mechanic were fixing a flat tyre of his SUV near Jakhauli toll plaza on the road side and a speeding truck ram over them.
Jattana, who had unsuccessfully contested polls twice from Talwandi Sabo assembly segment in Bathinda district, was returning to Punjab after attending a meeting in Delhi.
Sonepat police spokesman Ravinder Kumar said that the Congress leader and his driver were killed on the spot and the gunman is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
"The truck driver managed to flee after the incident, leaving the vehicle behind. The police have started an investigation into the matter and the driver will be arrested soon. The police are in the process of registering an FIR in the case," he added. Jattana had previously served as chairman in the Punjab government....
