Pune building collapses after waste crashes on it, 12 trapped
PUNE, July 9 -- A three-storey administrative building of a private company at the Moshi garbage depot in Pimpri Chinchwad collapsed after a huge mound of legacy waste crashed onto it following heavy rainfall on Wednesday, officials said. Eleven people had been rescued by night, while 12 others were still feared trapped beneath the debris, they said.
The incident occurred around 1.30pm when employees were having lunch inside the building.
Five employees managed to escape while six others were pulled out during a rescue operation involving the Army, National Disaster Response Force, Border Security Force, PCMC Fire Brigade and police, officials said.
Maharashtra disaster management minister Girish Mahajan said: "We have managed to speak to three of the trapped persons. Every effort is being made to rescue everyone safely," he said.
"Prima facie, it appears due to heavy rains, the waste became loose and collapsed on top of the building. There were over 20people inside when it happened," said Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi.
At least nine people died and over 3,500 others were rescued after record rainfall triggered widespread flooding across Gujarat's Surat district over July 6 and 7. Collector Tejash Parmar said the nine deaths were caused by rain-related incidents like electrocution, drowning, lightning strikes and falling trees while 3,800 people have been shifted to safer places....
