Orange alert issued in 9 districts as heavy rain blocks over 100 roads
Mussoorie, July 11 -- Persistent monsoon showers battered the state on Friday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain across nine districts till Saturday afternoon.
Landslides triggered by the downpour blocked over 100 roads statewide, while district administrations suspended classes in schools and Anganwadi centres as a precaution.
In Nainital, two people were injured when a tree uprooted by overnight rain fell near high court area.
SDRF personnel, with police and fire services, cleared debris and shifted the injured to BD Pandey Hospital.
According to public works department, Pauri Garhwal was among the worst-hit districts, while major disruptions were also reported from Tehri, Dehradun, Chamoli, Uttarkashi and Nainital. At the time of filing the report, restoration work was underway with heavy machinery deployed at multiple sites.
In Uttarkashi, a major landslide at Syana Chatti on NH-134 deposited huge boulders on the Yamunotri highway, disrupting traffic. The Gangotri National Highway was also reopened near Nalupani after debris clearance.
District magistrate Prashant Arya ordered the permanent deployment of an excavator at the vulnerable stretch to ensure rapid response to future blockages.
In Tehri, three families were evacuated from New Tehri after heavy rain damaged a retaining wall near their homes. District magistrate Nitika Khandelwal ordered temporary rehabilitation and immediate protective measures, including slope stabilization and construction of a retaining wall. An inquiry has also been initiated into the alleged unscientific excavation that contributed to the incident....
