Orange alert for heatwave in city
Chandigarh, May 20 -- An orange alert for heatwave and severe heatwave has been sounded in the city with the day temperature expected to go up to 44degC in the coming days.
Orange is the second highest of the four-colour warning system issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) which asks people to remain prepared for severe weather conditions. The maximum temperature on Tuesday was 43.2degC, 4.3 degrees above normal. It did not qualify as a heatwave under IMD standards. In this region, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature crosses 40degC and remains 4.5degC to 6.4degC above normal. A severe heatwave is declared when the temperature is more than 6.5degC above normal. Based on absolute values, heatwave is declared at 45degC and severe heatwaves at 47degC. Officials said a severe heatwave alert will be in place on May 22, while heatwave conditions are likely before that. The minimum increased from 24.6degC on Monday to 25.3degC on Tuesday, which is normal for this time of year....
