Patiala, May 22 -- A 21-month-old girl was allegedly killed by her mother in Patiala, with the family initially attempting to pass off the death as an accident, police said on Thursday. Police have arrested the child's mother, Lovepreet Kaur for killing her daughter. According to the police, the incident took place on Tuesday morning following which family members rushed the injured toddler to Government Rajindra Hospital. They initially informed doctors and police officials that the child had accidentally fallen on a knife while playing inside the house. SHO Gurpreet Singh of Passiana police station said subsequent questioning revealed contradictions in statements made by family members. During the probe, the child's father allegedly disclosed that his wife had killed their daughter. Police said the couple got married in 2023 and the victim was the couple's only child. Investigators suspect the accused allegedly attacked the toddler after becoming irritated by her continuous crying, though the exact sequence of events leading to the death is still under investigation. The accused was taken into custody and booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). "We have arrested the accused mother. The court granted one-day police remand and we will thoroughly investigate the matter," said the SHO. He said the accused had reportedly been undergoing treatment for depression and was taking medication. Police, however, said they were examining all aspects of the case....
