Chandigarh, Sept. 29 -- Police have arrested a Rohtak man for allegedly impersonating an IAS and IPS officer and cheating a PhD scholar from Panchkula of Rs.30 lakh. The accused, Amit Kumar, was arrested on Sunday and produced in court, which sent him to one-day police remand. According to police, the complainant, a research scholar at Panjab University, met Kumar through the matrimonial app Jeevansathi. She alleged that Kumar claimed to be an IAS officer and an assistant commissioner in the department of excise and luxury in New Delhi. Police said Kumar allegedly told the complainant that his mother was ill and promised to help her secure a government job. He allegedly gained access to her bank account and also took possession of her mobile phone and SIM card, preventing her from receiving transaction alerts. She was subsequently allegedly duped of Rs.30 lakh. Kumar also allegedly claimed to be an IPS officer and sent the woman photographs of himself in uniform to gain her trust, police said.
