Mohali, Aug. 20 -- A Special Fast Track Court has sentenced Vinod Kumar, a resident of Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, to seven years of imprisonment for attempting to sexually assault a four-year-old girl. The court has imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 on him. According to the prosecution, Phase 8 police had registered an FIR on July 2, 2025, on the mother's statement under Section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The incident took place on June 29, 2025, when Kumar, who was living as a tenant in the neighbourhood, allegedly called the child into his room and attempted to sexually assault her. Hearing the girl cry, her mother rushed to the room, following which the accused fled. The child was admitted to civil hospital, Phase 6. Police arrested Kumar on July 12 based on the medical report and the mother's statement. The next day, police secured his one-day remand to collect further evidence.
