Ludhiana, July 25 -- A 23-year-old woman from Ludhiana district, who had moved to Canada around five years ago, was allegedly strangled to death by her live-in partner in Edmonton, Alberta. The victim, Damanpreet Kaur, a native of Lall Kalan village near Samrala, had moved to Canada on a study visa. She was the only child of her parents, who had reportedly borrowed money and exhausted their savings to send her abroad in the hope of securing a brighter future. According to the Edmonton Police Service, officers responded to a call regarding an unresponsive woman with suspicious injuries at a residence in the Silverberry neighbourhood of southeast Edmonton on July 9. Emergency responders rushed the 23-year-old woman to hospital in critical condition, where she remained under treatment for several days before succumbing to her injuries on July 12. An autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiner's Office later concluded that Damanpreet's death was a homicide and that she had died due to strangulation. Following the investigation, police arrested her live-partner, Ritish Kumar, 22, a native of Delhi, and charged him with second-degree murder. The tragic news has devastated Damanpreet's family in Samrala. Relatives said they were struggling to come to terms with the loss and were awaiting the repatriation of her mortal remains so that her last rites could be performed in her native village. Village panchayat member Jagjit Singh said Damanpreet was the sole hope of her family. "Her parents are financially weak and had taken loans to send her abroad. She was their only child and they believed she would help the family repay its debts and improve their circumstances. Her death has shattered the entire family," he said. Residents of Lall Kalan said Damanpreet was a hardworking and ambitious young woman whose success abroad was seen as a source of pride for the village.
