Landslide damages vehicles in Kullu, Met predicts wet spell
Shimla, April 19 -- A massive landslide triggered by rains at Ghatigad on Manikaran-Barshaini road in Kullu district badly damaged several vehicles on Saturday morning.
Sensing the threat, the driver and other occupants managed to move to safety. No injuries were reported in the incident. However, the locals were panicked as frequent slides on this stretch pose a risk to commuters, officials said.
On Thursday, an earth-mover operator had a narrow escape on this route when the falling boulders hit the heavy machinery that was clearing debris on the road.
The locals have threatened a road blockade on April 30 if the administration fails to take effective steps to make commuting safe in an otherwise perilous stretch.
They are also demanded the construction of a Bailey bridge along Sheila Road as an alternative. Congress MLA Sunder Singh Thakur also visited the landslide-prone stretch along with officials and expressedrelief after there was no loss of life.
Directing the authorities concerned to construct a Bailey bridge as an alternative route, Thakur stressed expediting approval from the Gram Sabha and the Forest Rights Act.
The Forest Rights Act, 2006, which recognises the rights of forest-dwelling communities, requires consent from the gram sabha for using forest land for non-forestry purposes. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain was observed at isolated places over the state during the past 24 hours since Friday evening, with the local met office issuing a yellow warning of thunderstorm and lightning for Sunday.

The Met also predicted a wet spell of light rain and snow at isolated places in the state on Sunday, Monday and Friday and issued a yellow warning of thunderstorm, lightning with gusty winds (30-40kmph) in four districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu and Mandi on Sunday.
