Mussoorie, Sept. 14 -- A 65-year-old temple priest from Kedarnath was killed after being struck by a falling boulder near Chirbasa on the Kedarnath pedestrian route on Sunday, officials said on Sunday. The incident took place at around 11.15 am in the Chirbasa area, where boulders suddenly began rolling down the hillside amid intermittent rains and recurring landslides. The deceased was identified as Madan Mohan Tiwari, 65, a resident of Pathali village near Ukhimath. Officials from the district disaster management control room in Rudraprayag said the authorities took possession of the body following the incident and temporarily halted the Kedarnath yatra in view of the safety threat posed by continuing boulder falls and landslides. Raj Kumar Tiwari, president of the Shri Kedar Sabha temple priest committee at Kedarnath, said Tiwari was a temple priest and also owned a prasad shop at Kedarnath. He was returning towards Kedarnath on a mule when a large boulder falling from the landslide-affected area at Chirbasa struck his head, resulting in his death. "The deceased Madan Mohan Tiwari was a temple priest who also owned a prasad shop at Kedarnath and was heading towards Kedarnath on a mule when suddenly a huge boulder falling from the landslide spot at Chirbasa struck his head, resulting in his death," Raj Kumar Tiwari said. Madan Mohan Tiwari's wife, Vijay Lakshmi, was the village head of Pathali village. He is survived by two sons, according to Raj Kumar Tiwari. Keshav Tiwari, a temple priest and member of Kedar Sabha Kedarnath, said the situation at the site remained critical because of the continuing movement of boulders from the landslide-affected hillside. "The situation is critical at the spot as we also were on our way home from Kedarnath to attend a religious ceremony but had to return due to the massive landslide, which has led to boulders rolling down at great speed, making the crossover extremely risky," he said....
