Chandigarh, Sept. 11 -- Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Thursday warned drug peddlers to abandon the illegal trade or face intensified action as he launched a community-led anti-drug awareness campaign on Thursday. Addressing an awareness programme organised by the municipal corporation (MC), Kataria called for sustained, coordinated efforts to make the city drug-free. He said drug abuse was among the most serious challenges confronting society, damaging individuals, families and communities and threatening the future of the nation. The administrator particularly appreciated the role of SHGs in taking the campaign to the grassroots and helping connect affected families with counselling, treatment and rehabilitation services. He also stressed the need for regular awareness drives, street plays and outreach programmes in schools, colleges, sectors, colonies, markets and other public places. The programme also marked the launch of the Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026. Mayor Saurabh Joshi, who was present on the occasion, called for "bulldozer action" against drug peddlers.
