JD(U) expels Anant Singh, his wife for 6 yrs
PATNA, Oct. 25 -- The Janata Dal (United) on Saturday expelled party strongman and an MLA from the Mokama constituency in Bihar, Anant Singh, and his wife and former legislator Neelam Devi for six years for alleged anti-party activities.
In a statement issued by its Bihar unit chief Umesh Singh Kushwaha, the party said Singh's primary membership was "terminated with immediate effect for defying party directives, using insulting language against the top leadership and campaigning for a rival party's candidate in the recent legislative council elections". Devi's primary membership was also terminated over her alleged involvement in anti-party activities, it added. The JD(U) has also recommended to the Bihar assembly speaker that Singh's membership as an MLA be terminated under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.
The development comes days after Singh virtually revolted against the JD(U) by campaigning for Jan Suraaj Party's candidate Anuj Singh in the Bihar legislative council elections. He also vowed to defeat JD(U)'s Neeraj Kumar.
HT reached out to Singh but did not receive a comment. But he recently told the media that he would not be surprised if the party took disciplinary action against him.
The Mokama assembly seat, a fiefdom of Singh, has remained with his family since 1990, except for a brief interlude during which it was wrested by a rival 'baahubali' (strongman).
JD(U) MLA Shyam Rajak said the party took disciplinary action against Singh for his "follies and indisciplined behaviour"....
