India looks to FTAs to further boost exports
New Delhi, June 22 -- India is planning a nationwide outreach programme to help exporters make better use of recently concluded bilateral trade agreements, as the government seeks to sustain export growth and deepen integration with global value chains, commerce secretary Rajesh Agrawal said.
The initiative will focus on utilisation of nine trade agreements covering 38 countries that together account for about 60% of global trade, he said.
India's overall exports of goods and services grew 14.6% year-on-year in the first two months of the current financial year (FY) despite global uncertainties stemming from tensions in West Asia, Agrawal said. "India's exports have grown consistently over 12 years, nearly doubled to record $863 billion in 2025-26. And we hope. we will continue the momentum, with maybe a renewed vigour, with all these FTAs also coming in place," he added.
India's total exports rose from $468 billion in 2014-15, comprising $310 billion in merchandise exports and $158 billion in services exports, to $863 billion in 2025-26. Merchandise exports increased to $442 billion over the period, while services exports grew to $421 billion.
Agrawal said the expansion of India's trade agreement network has been central to the government's export strategy. Since 2021, India has concluded trade agreements with Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the United Kingdom, Oman, New Zealand and the European Union. India and the United States have also announced a framework for an interim bilateral trade agreement.According to Agrawal, these agreements provide preferential market access for Indian exporters, improve regulatory predictability and could encourage new investment and supply chains. To improve utilisation of the agreements, the commerce department plans a series of workshops across the country. "So, this is something that we are doing as a mission mode this year. And you will see a flurry of workshops across the country... let people know about the new opportunities on the house, so that, based on their own potential, own desire, they are able to take the benefits," he said.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to visit India on Monday. It is expected that the two-day talk (June 23-24) could pave way for an interim BTA soon.
The February 7 framework resolved almost all issues pertaining to an interim BTA barring the tariff that the US would offer. India seeks a tariff framework that would give it comparative advantage against competitors such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Vietnam in the US market.Agrawal said exports would play a critical role in India's growth over the next two decades, with services exports expected to contribute significantly. The government is also considering collecting more granular data on services exports to enable targeted policy interventions....
