HC upholds dismissal of bus driver
Chandigarh, Oct. 8 -- The Punjab and Haryana high court has upheld the termination of a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) driver found driving a bus under the influence of liquor, dismissing his challenge to the labour court award.
The driver, Balwant Singh argued that he had served for nearly 24 years and was terminated without a charge-sheet or regular departmental inquiry. He sought reinstatement, continuity of service and back wages. He was terminated in April 2023 following an incident, where he allegedly drove a CTU bus in an intoxicated condition. In February 2025, the labour court held his termination valid, an order he challenged in the high court.
UT's counsel, Himanshu Malik defended the termination order and the labour court award, submitting that the evidence had been properly appreciated and there was no ground for the high court to interfere.
Justice Kirti Singh noted that the labour court considered the driver's admissions about his medical examination after the incident and the personal hearing held before his termination. The high court found no perversity or legal error in the award and dismissed the petition.htc...
