Chandigarh, Oct. 11 -- The Punjab and Haryana high court (HC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a letter addressed to the chief justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, raising concerns over the wages and service conditions of Class-4 staff at Ankur School on the Panjab University campus. The letter alleges that contractual workers at the school are paid Rs.15,000 a month and permanent staff Rs.17,000, while the notified DC rate is Rs.24,494 a month. It also raises concerns about alleged wage deductions and threats of termination. The letter further sought the enforcement of the notified wage rate, payment of alleged arrears and protection for the workers' against adverseaction. The court registered the matter as a public interest litigation. Appearing for the UT administration, advocate Himanshu Malik sought time to have the matter enquired into and file a detailed affidavit in this regard.
