HC stays arrest of former Rohtak Bar president
Chandigarh, July 17 -- The Punjab and Haryana high court has stayed arrest of Lokinder Phougat, former president of the District Bar Association, Rohtak in a criminal case registered on allegations of cheating and forgery.
The court acted on the anticipatory bail of Phougat registered on May 9 in Rohtak.
Phougat's counsel, Himanshu Malik told the court that the allegations were politically motivated and arose out of a long-standing dispute relating to the affairs of the association.
Proceedings before the Bar Council of India concerning the petitioner had already been stayed by the Delhi high court regarding suspension of Bar license of the petitioner, the court was told.
The court while seeking a status report regarding the allegations and the evidence collected during the investigation directed that the arrest of the petitioner shall remain stayed till the next date of hearing on July 27....
