Chandigarh, Aug. 14 -- An inter-state arms supply network operating between Rajasthan and Chandigarh was busted with the arrest of five persons and recovery of six illegal firearms, 19 live cartridges and two magazines. The breakthrough came with the arrest of Gurcharan Singh, alias GC, a 28-year-old resident of Rajasthan's Deeg district, after the operations cell of Chandigarh police received a tip-off. Scrutiny of his bank accounts revealed that a Chandigarh resident, identified as Gurbachan Singh, alias Guri, had transferred around Rs.2 lakh to him in connection with the weapons trade. Guri was arrested from his Sector 38 residence on August 8 and a sophisticated automatic pistol and 10 live cartridges were recovered from him. Further investigation led the police team to Bharatpur in Rajasthan, where Pushpindera, alias Bhura, 31, was arrested on August 10 with a sophisticated country-made pistol, three live cartridges and a magazine. The same day, police arrested Sarvan, alias Soli, 33, a resident of Dhanas, Chandigarh with a country-made pistol and a live cartridge. Another recovery was made on the basis of GC's disclosure, with police recovering a country-made pistol, three live cartridges and a magazine. A further link emerged on August 12 with the arrest of Lokesh Meena, 25, of Kota district, Rajasthan. During interrogation, Meena disclosed that he and Gurcharan used to procure illegal weapons from a person known as "Paji" in Madhya Pradesh. The weapons were allegedly transported to Chandigarh for supply to Guri and his associates. Police said Meena further disclosed that around 10 to 12 illegal weapons had already been supplied to Chandigarh through the network. A country-made pistol and two cartridges were recovered from him. According to police, Gurcharan, who holds an MA in Economics and operates a self-drive car rental service, has previously been booked in cases including attempt to murder and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Guri too holds a Masters in Economics and runs a computer centre in Dadumajra Colony. Pushpindera, a farmer, has cases relating to attempt to murder, quarrelling and Arms Act against him. Sarvan, who works as a gardener with Chandigarh municipal corporation has past cases of gambling and quarrelling. Police said Meena was also connected to gangs in Madhya Pradesh and was a key link in procuring weapons from MP. He also had a criminal history involving attempt to murder, Arms Act and quarrel cases. Police said the investigation is continuing to identify the source and purchasers of the weapons, trace the remaining financial transactions and establish the roles of other members of the network.
