Free, open Indo-Pacific key: Modi
New Delhi, July 8 -- India follows the path of development, not expansionism, and is a strong votary of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while addressing the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Modi's remarks, made before a gathering that included Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, did not refer to any country but came against the backdrop of concerns across the region over China's assertive behaviour and expansionism in the South China Sea.
The PM said the shared civilisational links and cultural heritage of India and Indonesia should serve as the bedrock for stronger economic, trade and technology ties between the two countries that can enhance stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
"India is a country that follows the path of development, not the path of expansionism, and that is why we say in India 'sabka saath, sabka vikas' - together with all, development for all," Modi said, speaking in Hindi.
"India is a strong advocate of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. India believes in freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific," Modi said, pointing out that New Delhi has always backed "Asean centrality" while its Act East policy is Asean-centric.
Modi described India and Indonesia as "natural partners for the future" who shouldbe each other's strength. While bilateral trade was worthalmost $25 billion last year, the possibilities in this field are unlimited, and the two sides are also collaborating in key fields such as space, with a satellite tracking facility in Indonesia helping India's space programme....
