Four of Hoshiarpur family killed, 5 hurt in highway crash
Hoshiarpur, June 30 -- Four members of a family, including a couple and their son, were killed and five others were critically injured in a collision between a Maruti Baleno and a Hyundai Creta on the Jammu national highway on Monday morning.
The accident took place at 5.41 am near the Johal Dhaba area in Kishangarh, Jalandhar, triggering a traffic disruption on the busy route.
The victims were identified as Rupinder Singh, an armyman; his wife, Harpreet Kaur; their son Arshdeep Singh; and Rupinder's mother Santosh Kaur, all residents of Himmatpur in Hoshiarpur district.
According to police, the family was headed to the Sri Hazur Sahib pilgrimage in Nanded, Maharashtra, in the Baleno (PB07-CA-1510).
Preliminary investigations suggest that the Baleno, which was travelling from Bhogpur toward Jalandhar, was speeding.
The driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to cross the divider, causing it to hurtle into the opposite lane and crash into the oncoming Creta (UP21-C-9595), which was headed toward Pathankot. All four occupants of the Baleno were killed on the spot, said police.
The impact of the collision left both vehicles completely mangled, with debris scattered across the highway. A passerby alerted the State Special Force (SSF) and local residents rushed to help.
An Alawalpur police team, led by sub-inspector Ravinder Singh and DSP Rajeev Kumar, reached the spot shortly after the incident. Police deployed cranes to clear the wreckage from the highway to restore the flow of traffic.
The victims' bodies were moved to the Jalandhar civil hospital and their family were alerted in Hoshiarpur.
According to the family, Rupinder served in the Indian Army and was visiting Hoshiarpur on leave to take his family to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib to fulfil a religious commitment.
His sister-in-law Sarbjit Kaur told police the family had pledged to go to the religious shrine if Rupinder was blessed with a child.
"On Monday, they started their journey around 4.30 am. A few minutes later we got the news that they have met with an accident," said Sarbjit.
She said the last rites will be performed on Tuesday.
The five occupants of the Creta, all residents of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, also sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Fortis Hospital in Jalandhar before the authorities arrived. They were identified as Abdul Saeed Khan, his daughter Alina, Parveen Khan, Abdul Faizal Khan, and Maynal Khan. Further investigation into the crash is underway....
