Fazilka man furnishes 'forged' medical document for securing bail, booked
Chandigarh, March 23 -- A Fazilka man, facing a case regarding "smuggling of narcotics, explosives and weapons from Pakistan", has been booked in Chandigarh for submitting forged medical documents related to his mother to secure his interim bail, officials said. The FIR was registered at Sector 3 police station against Surat Singh, alias Surti, on the complaint of the National Investigation Agency.
Surat Singh is currently in judicial custody in connection with a 2021 case registered in Fazilka under the Explosives Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The agency stated that he had filed an application before the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking interim bail on the grounds of his mother's illness. In support of his plea, he submitted a medical outdoor ticket dated December 23, 2024, purportedly issued by Guru Nanak Dev University. On the court's directions on January 22, 2025, the National Investigation Agency conducted a discreet verification, which revealed that the document was forged.
A detailed report was subsequently submitted before the court that directed the NIA on February 9, 2026, to initiate appropriate criminal proceedings against the accused.
The agency has alleged that Surat Singh deliberately resorted to unfair means, even while being in custody, to obtain interim bail by arranging forged documents through his associates.
Supporting documents, including copies of court orders and verification reports, were submitted along with the NIA's complaint.
According to police officials, the case has been registered under Sections 318(4) (cheating), 338 (forgery), 336(3), 340(2) (forged document or electronic record) and also 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)....
