EC intensifies security arrangements ahead of 2nd phase polls
Kolkata, April 26 -- With 142 assembly constituencies, including 11 seats in Kolkata, going to polls on April 29 in the second phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission has intensified its security arrangements to ensure a free, fair and violence-free elections, officials aware of the developments said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the poll panel released the final voters' turnout in the first phase when 152 assembly seats went to polls on April 23. The final voters' turnout was 93.19%, the highest ever voters' turnout recorded in any assembly or Lok Sabha elections in the state.
Barring the two hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, all the other 14 districts which went to polls on Thursday recorded more than 90% turnout. Cooch Behar with 96.2% turnout registered the highest. "The entire EC machinery is ready for the second phase elections. The police, district and state machinery, including all the departments are active to ensure a free and fair poll. All issues, earlier raised by political parties, have been addressed," Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Chief Electoral Officer told reporters on Saturday....
