Mohali, Aug. 23 -- A couple allegedly died by suicide after consuming a poisonous substance at a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Zirakpur on Friday night. While the woman died on the spot, the man died during treatment at a hospital. In a seven-page suicide note recovered from the spot, the couple purportedly alleged that a schoolmate had cheated them of Rs.36 lakh on the promise of sending them abroad. They wrote that they had married with plans to move abroad. As the schoolmate was their classmate, they trusted him with their money to arrange for their travel abroad. The note alleges that the schoolmate took Rs.18 lakh each from them, amounting to Rs.36 lakh, but failed to send them abroad or return their money. The couple reportedly faced financial and mental stress after failing to recover the amount. Station house officer Jasbir Singh said forensic and handwriting examinations would be conducted to verify the note. Police are also looking into the couple's financial transactions with the schoolmate. The victims' families have been informed and police are recording their statements.
