Doctor killed as heavy rains lash U'khand; over 80 roads blocked
Mussoorie, July 12 -- A doctor was killed after a wall collapsed on him in Chamoli district and Char Dham Yatra routes disrupted as heavy rainfall lashed the state on Saturday, triggering landslides at multiple locations, officials said.
Police in Chamoli district said the deceased was identified as Dr Naveen Dimri (45) a medical officer in charge of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Narayanbagarh. The incident occurred at around 1pm after a wall at the centre collapsed and trapped Dr Dimri in the rubble. He was extracted by hospital staff, given emergency first-aid and rushed to the Sub-District Hospital in Karnaprayag for advanced care , said officers, adding that he succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, major pilgrimage routes, including Sirobagad on the Badrinath-Kedarnath Highway and Syana Chatti on the Yamunotri Highway, were blocked by heavy debris, leaving long queues of vehicles stranded on both sides of the roads.
A total of 84 roads across the state were closed due to landslides, said officials.
Rudraprayag district disaster management officer NS Rajwar said that the Rishikesh-Badrinath and Kedarnath National Highway was closed for five hours along the Sirobagad-Khankra stretch early on Saturday Local hoteliers, including Ripu Daman Singh from Karnaprayag said that the steep mountain stretch has routinely been blocked over the past 55 years, and an under-construction arch bridge meant to bypass the hazard continued to face unwarranted delay.
In Uttarkashi district, the closure of the main Yamunotri Highway near Syana Chatti prompted the district administration to create an alternative pedestrian route. Officials said teams from the SDRF and installed safety ropes along the footpath to aid stranded pilgrims....
