Diwali pet care: Vet shares 4 ways to keep your furry friends safe
India, Nov. 8 -- W
hile Diwali is a time for family, friends and festivities, it is important to pay special attention to our furry companions. The loud bursts of firecrackers, flashing lights and the bustle of guests can be overwhelming for pets, often leaving them frightened and seeking a place to hide. Veterinarian Dr Deepak Saraswat shares four practical ways to help pets cope with festive anxiety and stay safe during the celebrations.
When the noise gets too intense, pets naturally seek a place to hide. Set up a quiet sanctuary in a secluded room, with familiar comforts such as their bed, a favourite blanket, toys and plenty of fresh water.
Keep pets indoors during peak cracker hours and ensure all doors, windows and balcony gates are securely shut. Reschedule daily walks to earlier, quieter hours to avoid stressful encounters outside.
Avoid leaving pets home alone while celebrations are in full swing. If your dog or cat retreats under a bed or into a closet, don't force them out; let them stay where they feel safe. Sit nearby, speak in a calm voice and offer gentle affection if they seek it.
Diwali delicacies, particularly chocolates, nuts and rich sweets, can be harmful for pets. Stick to their regular diet and avoid feeding them table scraps. Also keep an eye on decorations: unattended diyas, hanging fairy lights and rangoli powders can pose risks of burns, electric shocks or digestive issues if ingested.
"If their anxiety seems unmanageable, get in touch with your vet. Avoid giving any over-the-counter anti-anxiety meds without a professional prescription," adds Dr Saraswat....
