Chandigarh, March 24 -- UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria will honour modernists on Tuesday, who played a crucial role in formation of Chandigarh, marking 75 years of the City Beautiful. These professionals include architects, engineers, administrators making significant contribution in making the city. The programme, organised by the administration in association with Chandigarh Citizens Foundation (CCF), will take place at the exhibition hall of Government Art Museum, Sector 10 on Tuesday.
The programme is a part of ongoing exhibition titled "Chandigarh's Indian Modernist" by the CCF that has been open since February 28 at the exhibition hall of Government Art Museum. The administration is also preparing a detailed proposal document regarding what kind of events and programmes can be conducted in institutions, professional bodies, RWAs, schools and colleges at their own level. That way the celebration of 75 years of making of Chandigarh will become a movement and a fitting tribute to the makers of the UT, the administration stated.
The makers of the city started building this modern city in 1951 and, 75 years later, Chandigarh still stands as a global model as a well-planned city that continues to offer high quality, harmonious and sustainable urban civic life for its citizens, it mentioned.
The neighbourhood concept of living in grid like structure of sectors, well-laid hierarchy of broad roads, open spaces, gardens, unique modern architectural styles, good water and underground sewerage, etc, gives residents a chance to live a harmonious life in close proximity to nature, it stated.
The city came into existence as Nehru's vision to have a modern city representing the freedom of India after having lost Lahore. Chandigarh was to be a symbol of national renewal to represent India's future, its modernity and its indomitable spirit, it added....
