Congress, AAP slam saffron party
Chandigarh, June 20 -- The row over a recent controversial remark by BJP's Chandigarh president Jatinder Malhotra drew a protest by AAP outside the BJP's office in the city on Friday.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring questioned the silence of the BJP leadership while the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) demanded his removal as Malhotra issued an apology, accusing the Congress of distorting his remarks.
Addressing mediapersons, Malhotra said, "If my remarks hurt anyone, I sincerely apologise. The Congress circulated a clipped portion of my speech, presenting it out of context to create regional and religious divisions for political gain."
Warring said Malhotra's remark was derogatory and against Punjabis. He asked Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and other state leaders to clarify whether they endorsed the remarks. "No senior BJP leader from Punjab publicly distanced themselves from the statement," he said. Meanwhile, Congress workers staged protests across Punjab, demanding action against Malhotra.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) demanded Malhotra's immediate removal as BJP's Chandigarh president, alleging that his remarks had hurt the sentiments of Punjabis in India and abroad. The party urged BJP national president Nitin Nabin to clarify the party's stand....
