Chandigarh, Oct. 3 -- Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday gave in-principle approval for a pilot spiritual wellness programme in Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Fazilka to complement medical treatment for people battling drug addiction. The decision was taken during a meeting between Mann and a delegation of the Art of Living Foundation. The programme will be implemented at outpatient opioid assisted treatment (OOAT) clinics and jails in Gurdaspur and Kapurthala. Mann said medical treatment alone was not sufficient for sustained recovery and stressed the need to strengthen psychosocial support, particularly during the initial months of treatment. "De-addiction is not merely a medical battle; it also involves emotions and willpower. The objective is not only to bring people into treatment but also to help them remain there and return to a healthy and dignified life," he said. The chief minister said the programme would focus on counselling, rehabilitation, relapse prevention and community participation. Trained local personnel would eventually take over its implementation to ensure its sustainability.
