CBI names CREST official Abrol, realtor Wadhwa in challan
Chandigarh, June 17 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday filed its first chargesheet in the alleged diversion of Rs.75-crore belonging to the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) and named CREST's project director,Sukhwinder Abrol, businessman Vikram Wadhwa and 11 others in the multi-crore financial fraud.
The chargesheet, running over 240 pages, was submitted before the special CBI court in Chandigarh. Besides Abrol and Wadhwa, the chargesheet names bankers Ribhav Rishi, Abhay Kumar and Seema Dhiman and two other unnamed bank officials and CREST accountant Sahul Kukkar.
Names of Wadhwa and Rishi have also figured in the other fraud cases reported in Haryana and Chandigarh. The names of shell entities CAPCO Fintech Services and Swastik Desh Project, through which funds were allegedly routed, also figured in the list. These names have been revealed by officials privy to the investigation. The CBI, in its media statement, has not put out any names. "A total of 13 accused persons have been charge-sheeted, comprising five bank officials of IDFC First Bank, two public servants of the CREST, two shell entities along with four private persons. They have been chargesheeted for offences of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, cheating, forgery, destruction of evidence, and offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, the CBI said in its statement.
A local court on Tuesday granted default bail to Wadhwa in the alleged Chandigarh Smart City funds diversion scam, after finding that the CBI had failed to file its chargesheet within the statutory 90-day period prescribed under law. Wadhwa's counsel argued that the accused had remained in continuous custody since March 14. The court observed that the 90-day period expired on June 11, 2026. He was ordered to be released on furnishing bail bonds of Rs.5 lakh along with two local sureties....
