Kolkata, Oct. 20 -- Traumatic asphyxia, broken ribs that punctured the lungs and injuries to the head and other organs were among the primary causes of deaths in most of the Durga Puja stampede victims in Kolkata, people aware of the autopsy details said on Monday. At least 19 people were killed and 25 were left injured after a stampede at the Chor Bagan Sarbojanin Durgotsav Samity Durga Puja in north Kolkata on Saturday evening. The dead included three men, 11 women and five children. "In at least six to seven cases, the preliminary autopsy report suggested that their rib cages had broken which punctured their lungs. Some died of traumatic asphyxia and a few had severe injuries on their head and other internal organs," a senior official said, asking not to be named. Traumatic asphyxia is compression of the chest and upper abdomen, leading to respiratory distress and insufficient oxygen intake. This usually happens during crush injuries, motor vehicle accidents and other incidents causing intense and persistent pressure on the chest. "These causes are common in stampede cases when the victims suffer intense persistent pressure," the official said. West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari earlier announced government job and an ex gratia of Rs.25 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs.5 lakh for injured. Also, the state would bear the medical expenses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced financial help of Rs.2 lakh for the families of each deceased and Rs.50,000 for injured. "The bodies have been handed over to the families after autopsy and reports are awaited," said another official....
