Bluestar anniversary today, security beefed up in Amritsar
Amritsar, June 5 -- A multi-layered security blanket of 4,000 police personnel and 11 paramilitary companies has been deployed across Amritsar ahead of the June 6 anniversary of Operation Bluestar.
The 1984 military operation was ordered by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to remove armed militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale from the Golden Temple complex.
Special director general of police, law and order, PK Sinha confirmed that 4,000 police personnel-consisting of 2,000 local officers and 2,000 from other state units-alongside 11 companies of paramilitary forces, including the Border Security Force (BSF), Rapid Action Force (RAF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), have been stationed across the city.
Reviewing the preparations alongside Amritsar commissioner of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Sinha said that special checkpoints have been established at city entry points, transit hubs, and high-footfall areas. Security measures include flag marches, foot patrols, and the deployment of specialised bomb disposal and sniffer dog squads.
The authorities have warned against the dissemination of rumours or provocative material on social media, noting that strict legal action will be taken against violators to maintain communal harmony.
The heightened security coincides with a remembrance march on June 5, followed by a call for an Amritsar bandh (shutdown) on June 6.
Amid these security measures, the annual commemorative events have commenced at the Golden Temple complex. An Akhand Path (uninterrupted scriptural recitation) began at the Akal Takht on Thursday, attended by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) officials.
A photo exhibition documenting the events and structural damage of 1984 has been set up outside the Diwan Hall of Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib and will remain open to visitors until June 6....
