BJP releases first list of 88 candidates for Assam polls
GUWAHATI, March 20 -- In Assam, where the BJP is hoping to come back to power for a third consecutive term, the party released its first list just four days ahead of the last date of filing nominations of March 23. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from Jalukbari, on the outskirts of Guwahati, a seat he has represented continuously since 2001.
The Congress and the Raijor Dal has also announced an alliance, ending days of speculation, for the upcoming Assam assembly elections. As part of the agreement, the Congress has agreed to give the regional outfit 11 seats while the two parties would have a "friendly contest" in two seats. State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi said that the decision was made for the "greater good" of Assam. "I thank the leadership of Raijor Dal for agreeing to be part of the opposition alliance. Voters in Assam want to get rid of the government of BJP led by Himanta Biswa Sarma. I also thank CPI for deciding to join us as well and appeal to other opposition parties to join hands for the greater cause and support the opposition alliance."
