BJP in review mode after loss in tN elections
Kolkata, May 13 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday took over the probe into the May 6 murder of Chandranath Rath, aide to West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari, a police officer familiar with the matter said.
"A seven-member CBI team headed by a Delhi-based deputy inspector general arrived in Kolkata and visited the crime scene. The other members of the team are from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh," a West Bengal police officer said, requesting anonymity. A team of forensic experts accompanied the CBI officers, he added.
The development comes 48 hours after a special investigation team (SIT) of the state police nabbed three men from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on Sunday as prime suspects in the murder.
The accused - Mayanak Raj Mishra, Vicky Maurya and Raj Singh - were brought to Bengal and arrested on Monday morning after hours of interrogation. North 24 Parganas district's Barasat court remanded them in 13 days of police custody. The state's special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee said all three were charged under sections 103(1) (murder), 111 (2)(a) (organised crime), 126 (2) (wrongful restraint), 3(5) (crime committed with common intention), and 61 (1) (criminal conspiracy) of the BNS and sections 25 and 27 of the Indian Arms Act.
Mayanak Raj Mishra and Vicky Maurya were detained from Buxar, Bihar, while Raj Singh, suspected to be the main contractual killer, was nabbed from Ballia in UP.
Rath, 41, a former Indian Air Force officer, was shot dead from close range inside his SUV while returning to his residence in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district. His driver, who was also shot, is being treated at a private hospital in Kolkata.
BJP leaders across the country blamed the TMC for the murder.
No TMC leader commented after the CBI took over the probe....
