Dehradun/Haldwani/Rudrapur, Sept. 6 -- BJP state chief and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt on Friday rejected allegations levelled against him in a Zero First Information Report (FIR) registered in Bengaluru over the "purification ritual" controversy. Speaking to reporters at the BJP headquarters in Dehradun, Bhatt said there was no media statement or written evidence to substantiate the allegations against him. "No one possesses any media statement or written evidence substantiating the allegations. Therefore, the question of such accusations against me does not even arise," he said. Bhatt also hit out at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. "The truth is that Kharge ji was completely misled by Uttarakhand Congress leaders. The people of Uttarakhand and BJP workers will give a befitting, democratic response to the atmosphere of social discord that Congress members are attempting to create," he said. He said that the BJP would organise sit-ins across all districts of Uttarakhand on September 7, with the objective of promoting social harmony and goodwill. "We will not allow them to divide or fragment society," he said. Meanwhile, state Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal accused Bhatt of attempting to gain political advantage by seeking to limit the reach of the law. "Uttarakhand BJP president Mahendra Bhatt had attempted to gain political advantage by limiting the reach of the law. This is a reaction to an action and a consequence of the situation created by the state government," Godiyal said. "It is now for the police to decide which path they take," he added. Meanwhile, Haldwani ASP Amit Kumar Saini, said the case would be transferred online from Bengaluru to Uttarakhand. "However, the Nainital Police has not received any official communication regarding the matter so far," he said. Congress workers on Saturday gheraoed the Rudrapur collectorate to protest against the FIR registered against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Police erected barricades at several points leading to the collectorate to prevent the protesters from entering the premises. Tension escalated when Congress workers attempted to cross the barricades. During the confrontation, former MLA Rajkumar Thukral fainted. Local women's wing president Monika Dhali also fainted and other party workers suffered some minor injuries.
