Chandigarh, Aug. 25 -- The city day's temperatures again rose to 36.4degC on Monday, the highest recorded this month, amid a weakening monsoon system. India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said temperatures may climb higher in the coming days as chances of rain remain low due to the shifting of the monsoon axis away from the city. The maximum temperature on Monday was 2.7 degrees above normal, up from 34.1degC on Sunday. It was the highest since August 12, when it had also touched 36.4degC, and slightly higher than last year's high for the month. The minimum temperature, meanwhile, dropped from 25.4degC on Sunday to 24.2degC on Monday, 1.8 degrees below normal. Over the next three days, the maximum is expected to remain between 35degC and 36degC, while the minimum will stay between 24degC and 25degC. IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul said hot and humid conditions will continue for now, although the city could still receive a few spells of rain in September. The city has recorded 551 mm of rain so far this monsoon, 17.2 mm below normal for the corresponding period. According to the initial forecast, the monsoon system is unlikely to be as strong in September due to the El Nino effect, while its withdrawal is likely to be declared by the end of the month....
