Allow transparent probe: Bajwa to AAP govt
Chandigarh, Aug. 18 -- Targeting the AAP government over the Enforcement Directorate's letter to the Punjab DGP, leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday questioned why the government was "weighing options" instead of allowing a transparent investigation.
The Congress leader was referring to the central agency's August 11 letter, where it sought an FIR against private person Nitin Gohal and others for allegedly using their influence to interfere in government functioning. The AAP government has maintained that the letter is a ploy by the BJP-led central government to use ED for political gains as the "party has been doing in other states right before polls".
Bajwa also questioned why the ED, if it had evidence suggesting the alleged involvement of the CM's aide, was seeking the state government's approval rather than taking action within its own mandate.
In another statement, former deputy chief minister and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also said if the ED had concrete evidence, the matter should be investigated independently and transparently.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO) demanded immediate registration of an FIR against the Punjab chief secretary and all those named in the ED letter.
PHRO chairman justice Ranjit Singh (retd) said officials who allegedly benefitted from the malpractice should also be brought under scrutiny.
A Punjab and Haryana high court lawyer Nikhil Saraf has also filed a complaint with the Punjab Vigilance Bureau chief director, seeking registration of FIR against those mentioned in the ED's letter....
