Agenda items to be tabled afresh before MC House
Chandigarh, Aug. 20 -- Following the controversy involving the 16 table agenda items passed without discussion during the Municipal Corporation's (MC) House meeting on July 31, mayor Saurabh Joshi on Wednesday declared them null and void.
Joshi said it was highly objectionable that these table agenda items were still being shown as passed in the minutes of the General House meeting. These should be placed in detail before the General House afresh for proper discussion and may be passed if required, he said.
It was reported how the agendas were passed even with an incomplete quorum, in violation of rules, as per the MC's own minutes of the meeting. Joshi said the issue was discussed in detail at a meeting held today at the BJP office under the chairmanship of state president Jatinder Pal Malhotra.
The meeting was attended by former state presidents Sanjay Tandon and Arun Sood, state general secretary (organisation) Manthri Srinivasullu, state general secretary Rambir Bhatti, ex-mayor Subhash Chawla and all BJP councillors.
The mayor clarified that the BJP is not against the agendas or development.
"We are only against the manner in which these agendas were passed. Every agenda must be properly discussed on the floor of the House before being passed. This is essential for transparency, accountability and the democratic functioning of the civic body," he said.
One of the agenda items was worth Rs.227 crore, one-third of the entire budget of the civic body. Passing it without discussion led to a backlash....
