Chandigarh, May 2 -- In the wake of media reports linking deaths of multiple people in a family in Mumbai to suspected watermelon consumption, the food safety administration of the UT health department has launched a citywide sampling drive; preliminary tests show no signs of adulteration so far. Officials said food safety officers have been directed to collect watermelon samples from markets across the city. The samples have been sent to laboratories notified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for detailed analysis. The department is currently awaiting final lab reports. As part of the preventive exercise, mobile food testing laboratories (MFTL)have been deployed in multiple sectors to carry out on-the-spot quality checks. Preliminary findings from these mobile units found no adulteration with artificial colours or added sugar has been detected in the samples tested so far. Officials said the move aims to ensure public safety and prevent any potential food-borne illness amid rising summer consumption of fruits.htc...
